Biofuels at UAE Summit(COP28) Promoting Biofuels Towards a Sustainable Energy Future

India is set to take a leading role at the upcoming UN Climate Conference (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), advocating for the widespread adoption of biofuels as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. As a founding member of the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), India is committed to promoting the development and use of biofuels, which can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts.

During the COP28 summit, India plans to showcase its ambitious biofuel roadmap, which aims to achieve a 20% blending of ethanol in petrol by 2025-26. The government will also highlight its initiatives to promote the production and use of biodiesel, including the National Policy on Biofuels 2020 and the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).

The UAE, one of the world’s leading oil-producing nations, has also shown a growing interest in biofuels. The country has set a target to achieve a 5% blending of biofuels in its transport sector by 2030. India’s advocacy for biofuels at COP28 is expected to encourage the UAE to further accelerate its biofuel adoption efforts.

India’s push for biofuels is driven by a multitude of factors, including the need to reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels, improve air quality, and create new employment opportunities. Biofuels offer a promising solution to these challenges, as they are produced from renewable sources and can be used without modifying existing vehicles or infrastructure.

The Indian government has implemented various policies and incentives to promote the development and use of biofuels. These include subsidies for biofuel production, tax breaks for biofuel consumption, and mandatory blending mandates. As a result of these initiatives, India has become a global leader in biofuel production and consumption.

India’s efforts to promote biofuels are expected to have a significant impact on the global biofuel market. The country’s growing demand for biofuels is expected to drive up prices, which will encourage further investment in biofuel production. This, in turn, will lead to increased production and consumption of biofuels worldwide, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

In addition to this, India is planning to highlight the importance of biofuels at the upcoming UN Climate Conference (COP28) in the UAE. The country intends to showcase the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), an initiative launched by India, the US, and Brazil at the G20 Summit held in New Delhi in September.

The GBA has rapidly expanded since its inception, drawing participation from 22 countries. The alliance is focused on securing the supply of biofuels, ensuring these biofuels remain affordable, and are produced sustainably. Founding members of the Alliance will continue outreach to other countries committed to these shared values with the goal of adding more countries to this effort.

The UAE has also joined the Global Biofuels Alliance, demonstrating its commitment to developing and promoting the use of sustainable and advanced biofuels. This participation comes as the Gulf country prepares to host the COP28 United Nations climate summit in November.

By spotlighting biofuels at the summit, India aims to encourage global action towards a clean energy transition, which is crucial for tackling the climate crisis.
